The Myth of Permanent Happiness: Understanding the Fleeting Nature of Satisfaction

Authors

Reading Time: 1 min read

  1. Satisfaction is a constantly changing goal: Just like we want to feel full and not hungry again, or want to feel well-rested and not need sleep again, happiness is a similar fleeting state that we can't achieve permanently.
  2. The pursuit of happiness can lead to unhappiness: When we make happiness a goal, it can become an unattainable outcome, causing us to feel unhappy and unsatisfied.
  3. The person who is fully satisfied is not fully present: When we make happiness our goal, we're essentially saying "I'll be happy when...". This means we're never fully present in the moment, as happiness is always something we're chasing.
  4. The focus should be on being happy in the moment, not on the goal: Instead of striving for happiness, we should focus on being happy with what we have in the present moment.
